Jindabyne - ski town Jobs, Employment & Info
Jindabyne is a town in New South Wales, Australia that overlooks Lake Jindabyne near the Snowy Mountains, in Snowy River Shire. It is a popular holiday resort, especially in winter, due to its proximity to ski resorts in the Kosciuszko National Park, including Thredbo and Perisher Blue. However, Jindabyne is also a popular tourist destination in summer as well, tourists frequenting Jindabyne to use Lake Jindabyne for activities such as fishing, water skiing and wakeboarding.
Originally situated on land that is now part of Lake Jindabyne, the township was transferred to its present location in the 1960s due to the damming of the Snowy River as part of the Snowy Mountains Scheme. It is one of the highest settlements of its size in Australia, at approximately 900 metres above sea level. Light snowfalls sometimes occur during winter. In mid-July in 2004 and 2005, snow fell up to half a metre following freak snowfalls over a large area of New South Wales.
Jindabyne has been the setting (and shooting location) for two recent feature films, the multi AFI-winning Somersault in 2004 and Jindabyne in 2006.
Around town you will find all the major services that you would need. There is 2 major supermarkets, with one in Nugget's Crossing and one in the old shopping area. There is a medical centre, also at Nugget's (upstairs) with the closest major hospital being an hours drive away in the township of Cooma. You wont have to look very hard to find gyms, ski & snowboard shops, chemists, pubs and heaps of great food. There is a number of great places to eat around town, and the problem is usually choosing where...There is Wrap a Go Go for Mexican, Marios Mineshaft for Italian, Wilfreds or TLC for great cafe food, amazing bakeries and heaps more.
At night time there is also lots of options and Jindabyne is definitely known as a party town during winter. There is pubs like Banjo Paterson Inn (Banjo's), Lake Jindabyne Hotel (The LJ), The Brumby Bar and a number of others which kick on into the early morning on select nights.
Jindabyne is the closest major town to New South Wale's biggest snow resorts of Perisher Blue, Thredbo, and Charlotte Pass and as such, its population grows many times over during the winter months. It is where most seasonal workers find accommodation during their stay, and it is a common sight to see resort staff waiting at the Barry Way roundabout every morning looking to hitch hike their way to work.
If your looking for second hand snow gear or to buy a car for when your working, make sure you check out the very popular community noticeboard at the base of the stairs at Nugget's Crossing, right next to the Newsagents.
